General educational activities at TU Delft;
Master course Context&Conceptualisation
I am involved in the Course ID4215, Context and Conceptualisation. This is a Masters course for the students of Design for Interaction (DfI) and of Strategic Product Design (SPD). Each year this course runs from September to January. The first weeks of the course cover contextmapping. By lecturing and mentoring during practicals I help students learning theory and practical aspects of contextmapping techniques.
Elective Master course Rich Visualisations
I am also involved in the elective course Rich Visualisations (Febr-June)
14 selected Master students explore various means of communication of user data (for example: personas, personal cards, storyboards, scenarios, mini-collages, infographics, documentary etc). The results are tested by design teams from real practice. This year (2006) two design teams from Philips Design have used the richvis material during a workshop about products for morning ritual.
Bachelor course Rituals
In the course rituals (runs in september) 3rd year students have to explore a ritual from people, e.g., watching tv together. Design assignment is to enhance this ritual with new concepts for products or services. By presenting their findings, ideas, and final concept on large panels, they also learn how to visualize their work.
Bachelor course Design Doing
First year students learn the basic process of designing. From identifying the user, problem, framing the problem, setting criteria, creating ideas, sketching and 3D modelling.
Past graduation projects of master students
I have been supervising the following graduation students:
- Victor Visser (graduated in 2004). He graduated with Boon Edam. This project was about the experience of entering high-capacity buildings. Victor designed a concept for a hotel lobby, in which people should feel welcome as if it is their own house, but at the same time feel safe that the 'wrong' people are rejected in this place.
- Janneke van Veen (graduated in 2005). She graduated with Boon Edam. This project was also about the experience of entering buildings, but not necessarily high capacity buildings. She designed a booklet to inspire the manufacturer of sliding doors to include the user experience more in their products
- Jonas Piet (graduated in 2005). Jonas designed a user-generated tourist information product for the city Vilnius. He conducted a very extensive and inspiring probe study to come to his vision for the product.
- Maartje Huinink (graduated in 2007). After a contextmapping internship at Scope, she also graduated at Scope. Her project was about consumer preferences, and including a contextual dimension in the results.
- Olga Reutelingsperger (graduated in 2007). She graduated with Research International. She designed a booklet to inspire the researchers of the quantitative department to create more impact when presenting the results of a quantitative study.
- Liv Kooijmans (graduated in 2007). She graduated with O'neill on a jacket for surfers. Based on a contextmapping study, she identified specific moments during the surfing experience, where a new product would benefit the experience. The jacket is worn over the wetsuit, while taking a little break out of the water, on the beach.
- Merlijn Kouprie (graduated in 2007). She graduated at StudioLab. Her graduation project was a research project, closely related to my phd research. She designed an experiment and I designed the tools to be used in the experiment. The topic was enhancing empathy in ideation workshops.
- Two students Marijke Verhoef & Christiaan Uythoven (summer 2009) have conducted a contextmapping study about gaming experiences for a game developer in Amsterdam as an internship.
- Geertje Roodbol (graduated 2009). She designed a new service concept for planning travels for the NS (Dutch railways) for 2012.
- Alazne Alberdi Alvaro (graduated 2010). She designed a strategy for targeting young men and their personal care for Philips DAP based on a contextmapping study about shaving with teens.
- Fenne van Doorn (graduated 2010). She designed a concept for the DOK (Delft Public Library) which stimulates children in their search process for finding books. She combined contextmapping and early prototyping and evaluated her concept with children.
